Measuring the Skill Gap of the Students of Geography Departments at Colleges of Education as Rated by Educational Supervisors.

Abstract

This study aims at (1) finding out the skills required for teachers of geography; (2) measuring the skill gap of the students at Geography Departments as rated by their educational supervisors; and (3) identifying sex differences in skill gaps of those students. The sample of the study consists of (32) university faculty members from the College of Education for Human Sciences at the University of Babylon. The researcher implemented the analytic descriptive approach, SPSS, and the psychometric analyses which reveal that the choice the faculty member makes to select what skills to teach rely highly on what they know about the needs of the work market for future teachers. The study recommends periodic training for faculty members of the Colleges of both Education and Basic Education. The study suggests also building a training program based of communication theory to improve teaching skills in the Departments of Geography.
